An actor, director, radio voice, cult-like personality: Orson Welles was many things. Although he crafted 13 films during his life, he left 15 films unfinished. Why do that? Why live that way? Netflix has just ordered the restoration and completion of one of those 15.
Welles made Citizen Kane at 25. What remains forever haunting is whether or not the final revelation of what Rosebud is actually tells us everything or anything at all.
Maybe Rosebud was something he couldn't get, or something he lost. Anyway, it wouldn't have explained anything... I don't think any word can explain a man's life. No, I guess Rosebud is just a... piece in a jigsaw puzzle... a missing piece.
Make them believe it. It's one thing to make the greatest movie ever, but to also pull off the greatest prank of all time… Welles was a man of endless surprises. His War of the Worlds radio broadcast is one for the ages.
A Self-Fulfilling prophecy.
After Citizen Kane, Welles directed The Magnificent Ambersons, only to see the studio re-edit the film , burn half the existing footage, and reshoot a happy ending. Welles said, "They destroyed ‘Ambersons,’ and they destroyed me." As great an artist as there ever was, you have to ask yourself, ah, what could have been...
Maybe rosebud for Orson Welles means:
What could have been?
Dammit, what could have been…
